Prague-Natalie Hodges

This past week in Prague has been an adventure to say the least. My class and I arrived on Jan. 17th, and stayed until today (the 21st). This city is beautiful and there were so many things to experience!

Our first day was just our travel day, however the train ride provided many oppurtunities to see the lovely sights of the Czech Republic as we made our way into the city.

The next day was filled with many emotions. Our morning and afternoon was spent at Terezin, a site that was used as a concentration camp during World War 2. Pavel, our guide, took us through the camp and told a variety of stories that included details of the daily horrors that prisoners faced and also talked about many individuals who persevered in a terrible environment. Even though we left in a somber mood, it was neccesary for us to learn about the significance of how music/arts were changed during and after the war. The evening was spent at the Czech Folklore Garden, where we were able to end the day on a more positive note. Dinner/music was provided and we had the opportunity to dance and laugh with eachother until we almost literally dropped.

On Thursday, we had a tour with Eva (a local of Czech Rep.) around the city of Prague. We were lucky enough to see the Czech library, the Prague castle and many more beautiful sights of the city! Afterwards, I spent the day with some of my classmates exploring the shops & resturants around town. I even got some delicious homemade gingerbread!

Friday was spent at the interactive musical instrument museum. I loved the animal exhibit where you could learn about how different animal sounds inspired a variety of songs. In the evening, we attended a performance of the Czech Philharmonic. This was by far one of the best orchestras I've seen on this trip! Many of the songs had an amazing blend of rhythms that came together in fantastic musical chords that had me physically taken aback by how powerful the overall sound was.

On our last day, we woke up to a city covered in a blanket of beautiful snow! A few classmates and I spent the morning at a viewpoint that overlooked the entire city of Prague and we explored a few small museums that were nearby as well. In the afternoon, we met the rest of the class to see the opera, "Kate and the Devil". This was an amazing show, and it was an entertaining comedy as well!

Tomorrow we head to Vienna, and we are excited for what's to come next!
